What size do I need the petals for my huge paper flowers?
The great thing about making these giant flowers is you can experiment with the size and make lots of different looks with one template. The petals are cut in three sizes.
As a guide these petal sizes make these size flowers;
The white flower is 26 inches wide, and the petals are 10 inches, 8 inches and 7 inches. Circle base 7 inches, stamen 9 inches. The largest petal filled a full A4 sheet with two smaller ones on another. Roughly 20 sheets of A4 card.
Pink flower is 20 inches wide and the petals are; 8, 7 and 6 inches. Base 6 inches and stamen 7 inches. You can fit roughly 3 petals on a 12 x 12 pieces of card using roughly 9 sheets of 12 x 12.
Teal flower is 14 inches wide and the petals were; 6, 5.5 and 5 inches. Base 4.5 inches and stamen 6 inches. These used 5 sheets of 12 x 12 inch card.
How many petals do I need?
You need roughly 26 petals to make huge paper flower for a wall or nursery decoration.
What do you need to make massive paper flowers?
To make large paper flower decorations you will need;
- 8 large petals
- 8 medium petals
- 10 small petals
- One 7 inch circle of card or Mount board
- One x inch middle
- One x inch middle
- Glue gun
- Paper or card
- A dowel or wooden spoon
- Scissors
For the extras you will need mirror or glitter card.
How do I make different-sized flowers?
To make different size giant flowers you can vary the size of the petals. Reduce your petal size and make sure you cut the same size for each petal.
For instance, if you reduce the large petal to half the size of A4, cut it 8 times so all petals are the same size. Do the same with your medium and small petals.
Send the petals to cut 8 times in your Cricut design space. The medium 8 times and the small 10 times this way the petals will all be the same.
How to make huge paper flowers the easy way
Once you have cut all of your petals you need to arrange your flower. This is easy!
Preparing your huge flowers
- Cut eight large petals, eight medium petals and ten small petals
- Make a base circle
- Cut some mount board or extra card to thicken the circle base
- Cut a middle for your flower out of glitter card or mirror card. For the larger flowers make them at least 9 inches wide. Cut a couple to get the best size you can always stack two middles together.
- Using a dowel or a wooden spoon handle roll the outer edges of your petals under until they curl. Do this for all petals.
- Next cut a small vertical slit in the base of each petal.
- Turn your petals over so the curl is facing down and pop some glue using a glue gun on the slit.
- Adjust the way the petal lays by adjusting the space in which the two pieces with the side of the slit overlay. The more you overlay the two pieces of card the more the petal will stand up. ( see video for help ) Hold the glue for a few seconds until it is cool. The more you close the two pieces together the more the petal will stand up. The larger petals should lay more flat and gradually stand up towards the middle. It works to add glue to 3 or 4 petals at once and work through as they need to cool a little before they stick. Hold each petal until cooled.
Construct your giant flower
- Place one large, one medium, and two small petals in a row on your base without sticking. This will give you an idea of how much space you need to leave between petals.
- Start by arranging your petals evenly around your circle base. Work in opposites so the outer large petals are even and fill in the gaps. Next do the medium size petals and finally two rows of small. You may not need all petals in the middle. I did one circle of 8 large petals, 1 circle of 8 medium petals and 2 circles of 5 small petals.
- Affix your glitter stamen to the centre of the flower. Gently bend the stems of the centre pollen middle piece and glue in the middle with your glue gun.
Giant paper flower tips
- If you want your base to be more sturdy you can use Mount board a piece of cardboard from a box or double the thickness of your card. This is handy if you need to transport your flowers.
- Use sticky tac to place flowers on the wall
- experiment with different colour centres and different card material
- Ink edges for added texture or colour.
- If you can not get extra large paper then just make more smaller flowers!
- If you do not have a cutting machine, you can cut the petals by hand a few times at a time. But cutting the centre would be fiddly. ( use the PDF provided)
What paper is used to make large paper flowers
You need paper with a thickness of at least 160 gsm. You can also use card or crepe paper. Experimenting with different card thicknesses will give you different results.
The white flower was made with copy paper of a thickness of 180 gsm. You can easily use scrapbooking paper which is ideal as it comes in so many colours!
