The One to Watch by Rachel Amphlett book Review.
The Blurb
Sophie Whittaker shared a terrifying secret. Hours later, she was dead.
Detective Kay Hunter and her colleagues are shocked by the vicious murder of a teenage girl at a private party in the Kentish countryside.
A tangled web of dark secrets is exposed as twisted motives point to a history of greed and corruption within the tight-knit community.
Confronted by a growing number of suspects and her own enemies who are waging a vendetta against her, Kay makes a shocking discovery that will make her question her trust in everyone she knows.
One to Watch is a gripping murder mystery thriller, and the third in the Detective Kay Hunter series:
1. SCARED TO DEATH
2. WILL TO LIVE
3. ONE TO WATCH
4. HELL TO PAY (out 2017)
My thoughts
When 16 year old Sophie is murdered at her engagement party every one seems devasted or are they?
Kay the leading detective is shocked to find that it was not just an engagement party but in fact a purity pledge party.
Why would someone as young as Sophie take a purity pledge? Did Sophie really love her husband to be or was there something she was trying to hide? Was Sophie put up to this?
Kay can not understands the antiquated ways that have been brought to these youngsters. In this day and age who would do this? Kay is determined to find the killer and leaves no avenue uncovered.
The plot thicken as you start to find out more about about the characters involved. Why would somebody want to kill Sophie? These were her family, her friends and her priest? I thought at some point it was every different person. With twists and turns along the way you think you know who the killer is and what is going to happen. then you are thrown the other way.
I like the way Rachel writes it’s easy to read interesting and quick paced. Nothing is dwelled in for too long. There is good mix between the crime story and Kay the detectives background. Kay is a confident woman with a side of vulnerability and she is instantly likeable.
This is part of the serious Kay Hunter detective series and It is the first one I have read. I didn’t need to read the previous ones to understand that there is someone out to get Kay. I can’t wait to read some others in the series, I’m intrigued to know more about this character.
