Billionaire Boy Musical

Billionaire Boy the Musical at the Garrick theatre London review 2021

Billionaire Boy the Musical is playing at the Garrick theatre in London. I went along to have a look at the latest London musical based on the book by David Walliams. I was completely surprised by the show! It’s heartwarming, funny, full of jokes including the odd bit that may go over the Kids heads.

What is the billionaire boy story about?

Billionaire boy is based on the billionaire boy book by David Walliams. It is a heartwarming and funny tale about a boy of a billionaire called Joe. Father and son Len and Joe Spud have very little, but overnight they become billionaires when Len (Joes dad ) invents a new loo roll called Bum Fresh. This great tale tells a good moral story that money can’t buy you love.

The story starts with Joe changing schools. He was bullied at his old school so he sets about trying to make new friends and learns a lot in the process.

It is a really lovely story with strong moral values

My Thoughts on Billionaire Boy the musical

Walliams is the roald dahl of the times and his unique quirky ways are funny and hilarious. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the quotes especially Mrs Tratt the dinner lady. Imagine being served cockroach cake or blue tac pie for school dinner! This was my first theatre show by Walliams so I was not sure what to expect. I took my son who studies performing arts and although he was 16 he absolutely loved it. Being a theatre lover myself I love to try all sorts of different shows and although Billionaire Boy Is aimed at younger children I was pleasantly surprised! It had a great storyline, it was engaging, fast paced and funny. All of the songs were catchy and after few choruses you could tap your feet or learn the words.

The billionaire Boy musical set

The set was really inventive on stage. The large Loo roll palace of ‘bum fresh towers’ was made up of moving cubes and boxes filled with different stage changers. For instance one set of boxes would open up to have chandeliers for the dining room scene. Later the boxes opened up with park signs and rubbish bins. Perhaps the best was the helicopter scene which I haven’t seen on stage since Miss Saigon!

How was it being in the theatre since COVID? Temperature checks and masks were asked to be worn by adults in this socially distanced venue. You can order drinks and snacks by your phone and have them delivered to your seat.
