My Sunday Photo, Pizza Express and an Old London Dairy

My Sunday Photo, Pizza Express and an Old London Dairy

So I love London its no secret, It is in every article somewhere on my blog. I also love History and architecture so visiting the big city is never a bore to me. So imagine how excited I was to find a  Pizza Express and an Old London Dairy all in one.

I seem to notice new things every time I go out, But the interesting thing is looking up the details later and finding out more information on what I have seen.

I knew there was something special about the building when I first saw it. The domed windows and the stunning stonework about the doors. It’s actually an old London dairy, situated on the corner of Coptic Street and Little Russel street and it is surrounded in history.

Obtaining milk in London in the 19th century was a risk. The cows were often infected and poorly treated, the milk was often topped up and or altered to go further. The cows were walked around london and brought to the door to minimise the risk of getting tampered milk.

So when George Barnham bought his first dairy in 1858 it was a revelation. He quickly acquired most of the houses  in museum , little Russel and Coptic street. He developed equipment and churns to refrigerate the milk and keep it more hygienically.

The building still has many of it original architectural features including dairy signs in stone on the facade.

Original tiles are still inside and when Pizza Express opened its second restaurant here in 1965 they kept as many features as possible.

I really need to visit this restaurant again so I can take more photos and admire its history.

Thank you for reading Pizza Express and an Old London Dairy.
