First up is Polpo which is a Venetian tapas restaurant with several locations. I absolutely love it here! Its got a lovely vibe in cozy rustic atmosphere with seriously good food. The Ape and Bird is one of the larger restaurants situated near Seven dials, so perfect for theatre land and shopping.
Serving many great small dishes and carafes of wine it makes it a quirky place to come to try something new. The classic meatballs are a must! The mini pizzette is also amazing. The food comes out when its ready in no particular order so it makes it fun to share and try different small plates with friends.
They also have a smaller restaurant in Soho and another one in Maiden lane which is also close to Covent Garden, again so also perfect for last minute theatre food.
Polpo operate bookings for lunch but its mainly first come first serve so you can expect to wait a little while at most restaurants.
Another favourite is A lovely French Bistro called Pierre Victoire Situated in Soho’s Deans street not far from Oxford street, make’s it easy walking distance from lots of main attractions.
Its a lovely Candle lit restaurant with wooden tables and chairs, low background music and a pleasant atmosphere. The food is fantastic traditional French style from baked St Marceline cheese starters to steak entrecôte for mains.
You can book the restaurant too so you can pre arrange when to go. They also operate a pre theatre set menu for two or three course’s, which changes regularly with each season. Reasonable prices for hearty food in the centre of London.
The hake is beautiful to try and their desserts are amazing too. They also have a sister restaurant called Prix Fixe further down Dean street too which is also smashing.
Another hidden gem and a really fun place is The Port House Spanish tapas restaurant, located on the Strand. A small hidden gem of a restaurant serving great small portions and a lovely wines to match.
Don’t be deceived from its appearance outside, it’s like a dark wine cellar inside with an extensive small plate menu. Ranging from Different flavours of potato croquettes to Calamari and baby squid.
I love their Patatas bravas, beef cheeks and some of their amazing cheese’s. Be sure to try out the Rosé Cava and maybe a flight of their vintage port after your meal too.
I hope I’ve given you some ideas to try something new next time you are in London we love these few restaurants and visit them regulary. For another fab suggestion try Dishoom its another smashing favourite of mine.
For some more great restaurants visit here.

Ive found plenty more little gems too! thanks for reading, check back to see some more when you next visit x
Having only visited London a handful of times and mainly eaten in chain restaurants, I would love to visit smaller, lesser know places. I love tapas and your post had my mouth watering. Hopefully husband and I will get the chance to visit London without the kids, and eating out will be high on our list of things to do x
Thanks Tracey, we are always trying new places some are not so successful, lol x
