I love finding unusual places on my travels and the village of Musignano and its wooden people on Lake maggiore is one of them.
Tucked up in the hills of Lake Maggiore Is a little Italian village of Musignano. Musignano is a town like no other with a very quirky look situated along the coast of the Italian lakes. The whole town is filled with wooden figures of people depicting different scenes.
We found Musignano while we were staying in the area of Maccagno at the Golfo Gabello resort on Lake Maggiore. The lovely people at Golfo Gabello took us up for a hike and some cheese tasting near Lake Delio. The views were pretty amazing but to come across this quirky little Italian village topped off our day.
We started our hike at the Church S Rocco
We started off just outside of Maccagno and parked up by a small church called Cheisa S Rocco which overlooked the lake. The views from here are just stunning you can see Cannobio and also Brissano in Switzerland from here.
From here we continued up on foot towards Lago Delio which was beautiful, easy on the foot but almost a climb. We found a delightful chapel, Capella di Cima half way up our route with again stunning view across Maggiore.
Wooden people tucked away in a peaceful little village on Lake Maggiore.
The town of Musignano is full of little wooden people! From a wooden man roasting chestnuts to a group of wooden people sat round the table eating dinner! Everywhere you turn are little men and women dressed up and posed.
You may have to close your eyes!
Not only that! Each wooden figure appears to be atonomically correct with belly buttons and even private parts! One poor soul is depicted on the chamberpot!
There were even animals with real hair!
You will find wooden dogs, a hog and even some sheep! Complete with their own sheep herder.
Some people are wearing knitted shawls, some smoking pipes and some people with real teeth!
It is enough to give you a good giggle! You will find it so interesting that the town have kept up their little tradition which many do not know about.
The town called Musignano rarely sees tourists
This quiet unassuming village of Musignano rarely sees tourists and there are rarely people walking around. You may see the odd couple tending to some grape vines in their back garden. All the while their wooden guests bask in the sunshine.
It is definitely worth a little walk through the town of Musignano if you are hiking up to Lago Delio to see its quirky wooden people. Don’t be shocked by some of the more marcarb positions and rather large genitals though!
The village itself is so pretty even without the wooden people.
You can just see a figure here washing their clothes in the waterfall of Musignano. It was so picturesque and completely peaceful.
We were kindly hosted by Bookings For You who organise interesting trips such as these. I am amazed how they know the places to go. For more information on the Golfo Gabello resort you can also take a look on the Bookings For You website.
