This is amazing. I’ve been looking for a UK resource for months now. Thank you!
Ahh thanks your welcome , this is quite new and I will add to it x
Hi, I am just researching CGM after 35 years as a curly girl! I am considering starting cowashing, but I already use low sulphate and parables free shampoo/conditioner. Is cowashing better?
I currently use John Frieda dream curls mousse to style. Is this approved on the list? I didn’t see it in the article.
Yes the mousse is, I wasn’t sure a whole back, it has a water soluble silicone in it so it’s ok.
I was quite surprised when I started cowashing. My hair needs lots of moisture so worked for me. I use as I am or organic avocado. I co wash every 2nd or 3rd wash depending on how it feels.
I’ll add the mousse to the list x
This is SO helpful, thank you. If i’m following the curly girl method can i use a clarifier with sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate or should i use one without? is the shea moisture retention shampoo a loo poo or clarifyer? HELP
Thank you. yes sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate is considered fine for clarifying. There are many similar names for other clarifying ingredients and they do bring more out all of the time. Juts bear in mind that it can dry the hair and you need to condition after. It looks like that shea moisture one contains mild surfactants so would be a lo poo and would not remove hard water build up.
Also do you loo poo or co wash just as often as you would normally wash your hair? then clarify every month? and what about refreshing, is that the days you aren’t washing your hair.
Hi, yes I wash my hair when it needs it but now I can go longer. I refresh when it looks a bit frizzy.
Thank you for this. Really helpful in finding some new products to try on my curly girl. Her hair gets so dry and matted but she wants to keep it long!
Fabulous I hope you find some that are suitable , yet organic shop range is lovely and reasonably priced x
Thank you for this, just what I needed for my curly girl. She has such dry hair that mats easily, but really wants to keep it long.
Fab list, very helpful. Will clarifying shampoo fade coloured hair though? I am trying to protect any colour from being washed out of my hair (yes I know curly girls shouldn’t really have dyed hair!)
Yes it would if used too much , it may strip and colour molecules on the surface. X
Yes it may remove and colour molecules on the outside hair shaft. It also depends how porous your hair is. If it’s porous your cuticles are open so will fade more. The clarifying shampoo will not be as strong as a regular one though x
Hi I love your list thank you so much for all your time and effort, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the soap n glory hair care range?
Thanks for this, I’m here from Reddit. I think boots own mousse is CG too!
Thank you ! I will
Add that too x
You are an absolute legend.
Ahh thank you 😂 x
A great resource. By the way, I think the Dr Organic range in Holland & Barrett is CG too. A great range of conditioners in particular.
Thank you! That’s lovely I’ll
Check it out x
Thank you so much for a really helpful list of products
I wonder if you or anyone else has any recommendations for hair colour. I now know I really shouldn’t but having coloured before finding cg I now have roots and need to do something about them
I’ve been trying to find a wash in wash out colour hoping it wouldn’t be so harsh but it’s really confusing and the only other option is having it cut from shoulder length to about an inch all over
And while I’m asking does anyone have any suggestions for a hairdresser in South Yorkshire?
Don’t want much do I!😉
Haha , no problem. Can’t help with hairdresser I’m
Afraid. But I still colour my hair I tend to do just my roots. Just keep deep conditioning and looking after it. I use affinage which is a low ammonia colour. X
I notice there are no hair sprays included in any lists, are there any you can recommend
Faith in Nature, Dragon Fruit conditioner in Holland & Barrett seems to pass the curly girl standards.
Thank you ! Not heard of the dragon fruit! X
Hiii, so glad I’ve found your page, this is so helpful 😁.
I’m looking for some advice if anyone could please help me out?? I’m only just looking into the CGM, as I was just looking for tips on YouTube for very thin very damaged very short hair😞. Always suffered with short thin hair so I’ve ruined it over the years with extensions and straightening. Nearly 40 so think it’s now time to stop and try best to embrace my little hair and make it as nice as I can naturally!! This new curly method has blown me away seems so confusing, but I’ve began with not using heat for three weeks, and I’m full of grey hair, massive roots, I’m going on holiday in two weeks and would be getting it cut coloured. But now I’m thinking can I get it coloured if trying this new method?? Also started using Redken extreme anti snap leave in treatment, is this curly friendly?? I’ve got the Boucleme travel starter kit on way which I’m so looking forward to using!!
Sorry for this long winded text, am just a bit lost with what next haha🙈
Ps I’ve been using women’s regain foam on front of scalp for a month now as I’m receding really bad.
Thank you, any advice would be really appreciated
Kind regards
Louise xxx
Hi, I just had a look at the Redkin and it contains silicones and wax so would not be curly girl suitable as it would coat the hair and not let any moisture in. It may feel
Better immediately but not in the long run. A really good protein builder to restructure would be olaplex 3 you can get it on amazon.
Colouring can damage the hair but I doubt I would go grey so it can be a risk to take if yo think your hair is strong enough. Lorraine Massey is prompting going grey in her next book. I colour the roots only of mine and don’t use bleach or high lift tint.
Anything you do will start to make it better. No heat tools and doing a deep conditioner whenever possible will greatly improve it. Other than that it is time x
Thanks so much😊xx
This is so helpful! The CG method tends to be mostly American based products and sometimes overwhelming! Thanks for taking the time to do this! 💕
Thank you for your kind message !
I am so happy to have discovered this blog and everything curl-related. I still can’t manage my curls properly so this is going to help so much! The UK product list is fab too, as almost everything I’ve seen on FB is all US. Thank you xx
So glad I can help! Just adding some more products so check again soon and good luck xx
Thank you for this page! Life saver! Xxx
Aww thanks! Love messages like this !
Sadly, it seems the Wilco’s conditioners have been discontinued.
Ahh thank you for letting me know ! X
Hi, with this product guide, I‘ll give the CGM a try, however, can you please tell me how you handle and care for your fringe? I have one too and currently use a heat defence spray (got2be Guardian Angel) as I straighten the fringe. Do I keep using that on the fringe. If plopping or when not using a comb, how do you separate your fringe from the rest of your hair??
Thank you so much for this brilliant product list 😊
Can you please let me know though how you deal with and care for your fringe? Do you use more product in it? Eg a heat protector for straightening? How do you separate it from the rest of your hair without a comb/combing? Xx
hi I just blow-dry it but i dont use any heat protecter as they all have silicone and this would be to heavy.I treat it as normal as its short and is regulary trimed and I am also not wanting to form a curl pattern in it. I also do not put leave in conditioner on it. I separate it before I plop then dry it after I have diffused my hair. x
Seems superdrugs extracts conditioner is being discontinued and changed to the fruity conditioner range. It seems to be CGM friendly but I’d double check to make sure.
Thank you for the update x
I’ve used the super drug extracts range for a long time, is the new version safe to use? I’m currently trying new products since it was discontinued but my hair has lost its wave? Not sure why as both new products are CG and on this list, Garnier with cranberry and the blondes purple treatment one (sorry can’t remember the name) about to buy noughty from amazon in the hope it brings back the wave! I have fine hair and seem to have hit a greasy flat wall!! Any advice welcome!
Hi I hope you got my other message , the new Superdrug Conditioners fruity are safe.
Don’t forget to clarify! Try one of the XHC shampoos in my new Savers post x
Hi new to trying the CGM. How often should I clarify? Thanks x
Some people do it once a month or when they need it.
Take a look at this Co wash post it has a section on it x
https://likelovedo.com/2019/08/curly-girl-method-co-washing-and-transitioning/
Hi
Love your hair and the page!
Could you please review the Trevor Sorbie curl products please that are available in Superdrug. They have specific curl products including a curl cream.. i found this range better than the Noughty range but do not know if it is curly girl approved.
Hi, thank you 😊 I’ll take a look for you x
Hi I am so happy I have found this page. Had lovely curls for years and then about 15 years ago got my self a pair of GHDs!! Fast forward to now and my hair is dry and has lost its natural wave. My hair is very fine and I am so keen to start I am just overwhelmed reading where to start. About a month ago I started using the new treseme sulphate free shampoo and conditioner range but that’s not on the list so probably need a shake up! Can I ask what co wash is please?
Thank you
So far I think most Trevor sorbie has ingredients that are not CG but I’ll let you know if I come across one. I’ll see if I can find the tresemme, Co washing is using no shampoo most co wash conditioner had two agents in oil and water which work together to lift dirt particles. I have a post here-
https://likelovedo.com/2019/08/curly-girl-method-co-washing-and-transitioning/
Thank you so, so much for all of this, it’s amazing.
My hair is very fine, very frizzy but has natural waves. I am about to start the CGM. Would you mind just checking my approach for me, please?
Thank you so much.. xx

Hi sorry for the late reply, all looks fine apart from the kind and natured which has changed its ingredients! ( hate it when they do that) I’ll check the conditioner of kind as that may be different. Olaplex is great! Good luck x
Hi, I am trying to do the CGM as I have wavy hair which tends to go frizzy. My main problem is that all products I’ve tried or sniffed have such strong fragrances and I react to them because of this (I am asthmatic). I found a conditioner in Poundland called Nutrafix which has a slight fragrance that washes out, but this was a while ago and I haven’t seen it since. I use low poo and wash out conditioner, both fragrance free and CG friendly, but they leave my hair very dry. Co-wash on its own weighed my hair down too much. I am looking at the diy recipes for leave-in conditioner. I will also try and make my own gel. Do you know of any products which are fragrance-free or a very low fragrance? My problem is making choices very limited! Thank you.
Hi this page is great for uk product as most I read is in the US. I’m starting the cgm on my 11 year old daughter as she has lovely curly hair but I have no clue how to save the curls and it just turns into a frizzy mess. Do u have any advice for doing it on a child? We don’t have time to wash in the morning so always ends up going to bed with it damp after her evening shower. I have absolutely no clue what I’m doing but I really want to save her beautiful hair!
Thanks for reading x
I would keep it pretty simple with a child so leave in conditioner then maybe spray with a little water and leave in the next morning. Use something soft to tie it back with for school. Maybe try a mousse for hold. Do you have a diffuser to dry her hair?
No we don’t have a diffuser, I didn’t know whether it would be too time consuming with her being young I might invest in one though to give it a try and see what results we get.
Thanks so much! Just to let you know, the wilkinsons happy hair conditioners have now been discontinued – I wonder if wilkinsons do any other safe conditioners?
Thank you for letting me know! It’s constantly changing! I will look out for you x
Hi and thank you so much for this it was so helpful, I’m curious about Tresemme Botanique nourish and replenish shampoo because some places I read its curly girl friendly but others say its not, I’m really new like only a couple weeks into CGM so I’ve got lots of products I’m not sure about I’m still learning but I might be wrong but is Sodium Laureth Sulfate not aloud? I swear its not but it’s in this tresemme botanique but like I said I have seen people say its CGM friendly I’m so confused its a lot of information to take in, I’d really appreciate your advice thank you xxx
This is extremely useful, thank you!
I would also recommend the Maui Moisture range too, it seems to be CG friendly – I’ve seen it sold on Boots and Superdrug! 🙂
Hello. This list is a great help thank you! Can you please explain, you have the Ultimate Blends Hair Mask in Banana up in your list of CGM approved but it has Benzyl Alcohol. When I put this into a CG approved search engine it comes up as not approved! I am getting really confused by some sites saying its okay and others not. What do you think?
Hi benzyl alcohol is used as a preservative and should not dry out the hair. It is considered a safe alcohol. Which search engine are you using some are not regularly updated x
Thanks for doing this list. I’m just starting cgm. I believe child’s farm conditioner is cgm friendly
Thanks ill add it to the list. Good luck!
I am re-posting my request as I can’t see a response to it, although others posted since have been replied to. I would really appreciate an answer!

PS. Thank you for doing this post, it is very interesting and helpful and the replies to other posters help too.
Hi sorry word press can be a bit glitchy. The only fragrance free ones I have seen are the faith in nature fragrance free, You can buy it online direct or from Holland and Barrett. The other one is Green people scent free direct from green people. I have just noticed Akin mild and gentle fragrance free too it looks a bit more pricey but it is cgm. Doing your own diy ones will be fun too Good luck
Thanks so much for this! Having checked Faith in Nature and Green People, the conditioners will be fine but the shampoos contain sulphates. I will look into the Akin range too, I’d forgotten about them.
Hi,
Is morrocan oil shampoo and conditioner on the CG list?
Thanks
Unfortunately not they have silicone in x
No unfortunately not it has silicone in it which is a shame
Hello this list is a great idea however many of the products are not curly girl approved I actually bought some and then checked via the curlsbot site…
https://www.curlsbot.com/
Unless I haven’t uNderstood something… not curly girl approved?
For example Curl jelly scrunching jelly contains harsh alcohols.
More than moisture umberto.gianni contains dimethkcone (silicone) and harsh alcohols that dry hair….
I’m confused!!! Help! Many thanks
Hi, I have just double checked the curl jelly And the ingredients on website and they now say alcohol. I have checked my tube and it def had no isopropyl alcohol. Does your new tube have it? If so they have changed ingredients. As far as I’m aware this is one of the only products that was c g friendly. I have not heard of the more than moisture it’s not on my post.
It’s very frustrating when brands change their ingredients I will be emailing to find out the answer. Thanks for your question x
The Tesco Extracts conditioner disappeared for a while, now it’s back with dimethicone in. Shame!!
Hiya!was just in tesco checking out the blueberry or coconut conditioner (very exciting Christmaseve activity!) they both have dimethicone in. It’s the same label as your pic bit the shelf tag says ‘new!’ So maybe new formula. Jist fyi 🙂
Hiya, the tesco blueberry and coconut conditioner both have dimethicone in now, I was just in tesco browsing them. Boo. Thought I’d found a bargain at 80p!
Why do they do that! thank you for letting me know x
Hi I’ve recently started my curly girl journey and it seems a little overwhelming. The product list is really helpful, thank you. Are there any hair oils that you can recommend and tips of when to use them. My hair lools nice and wavy the day i wash it but after I’ve slept it just looks a mess. Usually i would use heat to make it look better but trying to avoid that as well as brushing 😕
Thank you xx
Hi,
Just to let you know Wilko has discountinued the happy hair products.
Thank you for that info x
Fabulous information…well done and thank you for all the time it took to research this. I’m CG for almost 2 years now and it is definitely worth it. It takes trial and error and you do need to find products that suit YOUR hair!
Thanks again ☺️
Hello! Fab list! Thanks so much! Are you able to highlight which are cruelty free and vegan? I can see the Shea moisture ones and the Kind Natured ones seem to be. Any help appreciated x
Noughty is as well. I am in the process of doing a complete vegan post. so please check back.
Thank you so much for this, this is just the page I need 🙂
Hey, could you comment how to incorporate olaplex into a CG routine? Can you use the shampoo and conditioner as well as the hair perfector?
as far as I know it is only the Olaplex 3 that is cg safe. You would need to use a deep conditioner after as it does not condition only rebuilds bonds.
You haven’t got Alberto Balsam conditioner on here which I thought was CG approved? Please can you check if I am ok to use this?
sorry most contain silicone x
Hi!
Your page is so inspirational! Thank you
I was wondering whether you would mind checking my approach for me please?
Clarifying shampoo – Noughty
Co-wash – Noughty
Conditioner – Hello Wave Noughty
Low poo – Hello Wave Noughty
Scrunching Gel – cantu custard
So I have clarify shampood followed by Noughty leave in conditioner and scrunching 6 with cantu custard
Next few wash I will co wash and condition
1nce a month I will clarify and leave in conditioner and custard scrunch
Is that right?
Thank you for your time ❤️
sorry I missed this, sounds great! re access in a few weeks x
Hello! First of all, thank you so much for this resource, I am new to the CGM and didn’t really know where to start so this is great.
I really like Garnier’s Ultimate Blends line, and I was excited to see they’re now making shampoos and conditioners and that they were included on your website.
I was about to buy some but then saw that they contain sulfates? (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) Would they still be CGM approved?
And also I would like to know if you’d recommend to use these for cowash as I am considering giving it a go!
Many thanks 😀
Yes the shampoos contain sodium laurel sulphate and are not cg. Some conditioners are cg friendly but they do change their ingredients a lot so do check the label. the ones listed should still be ok x
Hi! Loving your emails etc, you are so helpful! I noticed that Alberto Balsam conditioner isn’t mentioned, is it suitable? I thought I’d checked the label but maybe I missed something?
Thank you
Herbal essence conditioner contains silicone x
Hi, I’ve just come across CGM this past week and is overwhelming with the products, do’s & don’ts😮 I don’t suppose there is links available for bundles to buy to start me off.
Thanks xx
I don’t have a link sorry but start with a basic conditioner to use as a leave in to and maybe a gel? Technique makes a bit of a difference too.
Hi there, I’m about to begin my cg journey but I’m not sure where to begin! I’ve got the garnier hair food 3 in 1 banana and the coconut one. Is the Palmers coconut shampoo cgm friendly and also is the body shop banana cgm friendly? I’ve tried the cantu curl activator cream but I don’t like it. Where do I begin? I’ve got really fine hair that’s lost its curl. I would usually be a 3a xx
Hi sorry for the late reply. The palmers contains sodium c14-16 olefin sulfonate which is considered ok for clarifying intermittently but considered cgm. However I do shampoo occasionally. It sounds like the products are too heavy for you. Some hair types especially fine do not do well with coconut. Do a clarifying treatment with apple cider vinegar or a coconut free shampoo. Maybe try something lightweight like a mousse to style and deep condition with the banana or the aloe vera conditioner. x
Such a handy list – exactly what I was looking for – thank you for taking the time to create this 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to message x
