How can I adapt the curly girl method?
Let’s look at some ways at these curly girl method changes and adapt it to suit your hair totally. I started the curly girl method over three years ago and I am still doing it now. However there are some things that are in the method that I don’t do today.
I’m a fully qualified hairdresser and have a lot of experience with hair from cutting, colouring, perming to straightening. I have also had experience with all textures of hair and curl types. With this said I knew my hair had a wave to it but I always blowdried it straight as I did not think I could achieve those results from my wavy hair. One of the things with hair is that it does have a certain extent of curl memory. Hair with start to stay in one parting or kink the more it is put there this is part of the way the curly girl method works over time. It will not give you curls you do not have but it will develop waves or curls you do.
Curly Girl Method changes you could use or drop
When I started the CGM method my first results were quite successful however my curls didn’t clump they were often left a bit stringy. Also the shape of my hair wasn’t correct either the layers were to long and I had some colour damage. You do not need to follow every rule it does not hurt to change it up bit. These tips are Curly Girl Method changes and rules you could use or drop as they may not be quite as important;
- You do not have to stick to the curly girl rules!
- Stop worrying over your curl type
- Not using shampoo
- Don’t feel you need to use loads of products
- Don’t think you need to style straight away soaking wet
- Don’t rely on someone else’s wash routine!
- Use a brush it won’t hurt!
You do not have to stick to the curly girl rules!
The curly girl method can be totally overwhelming and a lot learn. Don’t worry about sticking to all of the rules! When I first started I strictly stuck to no bad chemicals such as silicone, sulphates and parabens this is still do. But I also did not shampoo or use a brush. But some of these things I have stuck to and others I have occasionally ignored. It is your hair the curly girl method is really a guideline for you to understand your hair. There are a few ways you can be a little less strict about the Curly Girl Method.
Stop worrying over your curl type
I obsessed over my curl type worrying about what type curl I have. I compared my curl to all diagrams and they never matched. Not one curl is the same and never the same each time I washed it. Not one of us fall into one single category of a curl pattern this is not really something you need to worry about it is more about how you manage them.
It is more important to note your hair density and condition. Some people have fine hair some have thick hair. Products can weigh down hair and badly damaged hair will not curl well. It’s important to find out your own hair type that without obsessing about anybody else’s. Learn how to style your hair using the right products that don’t wear your hair down and using the right techniques.
Do not worry too much about using the odd Shampoo
The transition period can be hard your hair may feel greasy or even look straight! The first thing I did was not worry about using the odd wrong product I will still stay from silicone as I do not want this to lie on my hair and make it feel heavy. But sulphates are known to dry your hair but so can Apple Cider vinegar.wash
You might want to start your journey using a sulphate wash to help get rid of build up on your hair from the curl creams and conditioners you will be using.. Some people like to use a sulphate shampoo every now and then to clarify their hair. There are many ways in which to clarify and sometimes using a gentle clarifying shampoo every so often is not going to harm your hair too much.
One of my favourites which is sulphate free and chelating so will move build up So Good its Noughty Detox Dynamo shampoo
Don’t feel you need to use loads of products
Some of the best what days I’ve had with my hair I have only used one or two stylers. If your Hair is heavy and greasy skip the conditioner or curl cream. Curl cream doesn’t make your hair curly its mot a miracle worker! Curl cream helps create clumps and moisturises and conditions curl. Sometimes I use a gel sometimes a mousse only one product can work too. There are so many curly girl products choose just a couple to get you started!
Don’t get hung up on so called new phrases about the curly girl method.
Don’t get hung up on so called new phrases and curly girl hash tags. Do not pay attention or get hung up about knowing what all of the new and strange hashtags on Instagram mean. There are so many ways to style hair and many have been around for years. Often these these hashtags are just ways of searching Instagram they are not full proof way of styling your hair. Thats not to say they do not give you ideas. They are made up ways to try different techniques they are not full proof but one of these techniques might just work for you.
Don’t think you need to style straight away soaking wet
Lots of the curly girl method is about scrunching in conditioner to wet hair letting the hair from a ringlet and clump. This can prove hard work with some people and take an age to dry. Try washing your hair they applying styling products later after a few hours when your hair is drier. I often wash my hair let it dry bit and style later using one product and a wet brush to Clump it together.
Don’t rely on someone else’s wash routine!
Don’t rely on someone else’s wash routine! Just because it works for them it might not work for you. If you find a routine that works, stick to it until it stops working. Only change things in your routine one at a time so you do not confuse yourself. Find a curly girl product you really like keep using it and instead work on your routine and styling technique.
Can you use a brush in the curly girl method?
Use a brush it won’t hurt! Be gentle with your hair but knowing when to use a brush will help your curl form. Uses a wet brush, Denman brush or Behairful brush to brush in your products and help your curls clump in to ringlets.
Bottom line is it is your hair the curly girl method is really a guideline for you to understand your hair.
