A love Affair with Books, Hygge.

I have A love Affair with Books, I always have ever since I was a little girl. I treasured every single book I owned and I still do now.

In discovering Hygge one of the important things is living a calm life doing things you love.  A hobby or a pastime that make your soul content, Hence a good book.

A good book gives you someplace to go when you when you can not go anywhere. Cosy up with a book, create a calm reading space and lose you mind into another world.

“There are perhaps no days of our childhood we lived so fully as those we spent with a favourite book”  –Marcel Proust

My sister and I used to play libraries with our books as children, I even found some books recently with the little hand written slips still inside. My favourite book as a child was would you rather, a book that opens up possibilities, choices and makes you dream a little. Rather like the choices you make in life.

I even love having my books on display like my little reading corner below, I love all my books to match their environment and seeing as I am lucky to have so many this is not hard to do.

A book is a dream that you hold in your hand.   –Neil Gaiman

I love to hold books the feeling of turning the page to see whats in store, each page a precious piece of history or an insight in to someone’s mind.

For this reason I collect them, pretty ones, Hard back versions of my favourites, special editions, or old vintage copies.

I particulary love the Waterstones book of the year of which I have three pictured in these photos. You know you will get a fantastic interesting book that you will love and also a beautiful copy to keep. I cannot wait for next years book of the year.

I do have a kindle which I love, the instantaneous way in which you can download a book is so satisfying. When people recommend a book I download a quick sample for future reference, that way it’s cost me nothing and if I don’t enjoy reading it then I’ve lost nothing.

“Read the best books first, or you may not have a chance to read them at all” –Henry David Thoreau

I used to get so hung up about finishing a book, this however doesn’t worry me anymore. With all of the books already in this world and the books part written or still in the minds of the authors I will have plenty to keep me going. I will never be able to read them all, so I must pick the best ones and enjoy what I read. By putting it off due to having no time I will not even achieve a small percentage of my goal.

Not every book is your cup of tea, read what keeps you hooked, inspired or educated.

I read a variety of books from historical books, thrillers, classics and the occasional chicklit. Sometimes I read a few books at once, a nonfiction history book along side a lighthearted easy read.

Some of my favourite books are the fiction books set in past times. Especially those that have been written at that time by the author. Although being a fiction book they show a rare insight to what life was like in that era, a perfect slice of history all wrapped up in a beautiful story.

This is evident in novel’s such as The Great Gatsby by Scott F Fitzgerald which paints a Complete portrait of the roaring twenties.

Always read something that will make you look good if you die in the middle of it          –P.J. O’Rourke

One of my favourite books has to be Rebecca by Daphne du maurier. Written in 1938 and assumed to be set around a similar time, Rebecca is a romantic thriller that keeps you captivated form the very first line “last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again”. Where is Manderley and what happened there?

Daphne wrote in such a beautifully descriptive way you are absorbed by the smell of the flowers at Manderley, the sea breeze whisks you away and you are no longer in your chair in your living room.

“I do believe that something very magical can happen when you read a book” J K Rowling

Believe in the magic, explore different worlds, take time for yourself, turn the lights down low, Breathe, relax, read and be cosy.

Reading can be just one of those things to enhance your day, be it for 10 mins while in  the bath before you get up or before you go to bed.

I always get asked how I get time to read? You make time for what you love and if you are not doing this then you should. Turn off the television and go to bed a bit earlier, read in the car 10 mins early for the school run, read on the train, or even download an audiobook and read whilst doing the housework.

Above all do what you love because Hygge is all about finding your inner peace in the small things you enjoy.
